Louisiana Teens Left Body of Missing ASU Professor in a Dumpster: Police

The case of a missing Arizona State University professor who vanished in March took a dark turn on Friday as police announced the discovery of his remains in a landfill, allegedly dumped by two Louisiana teenagers.Junseok Chae, associate dean for research at ASU’s School of Engineering, was reported missing March 25 when he didn’t return home from work at the university. Authorities began searching a dump in Surprise, Arizona on May 11, but only discovered his body on July 17 after a weeks-long manhunt that involved dozens of people working 15-hour shifts and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Police say they also found related evidence in the landfill.Two teenagers, Javian Ezell, 19, and Gabrielle Austin, 18, were arrested in Shreveport, Louisiana after allegedly being caught driving the professor’s car. They face charges of first-degree murder, vehicle theft, and armed robbery. Police say the two allegedly killed Chae before leaving his body in a dumpster, which was then emptied out in the landfill. The motive and means of the alleged murder were not immediately clear, and police have not disclosed what relation, if any, the two teens had to the professor. Each is being held on a $1 million bond after extradition to Arizona. Chae, who received his undergraduate degree in South Korea, had worked at ASU researching and teaching electrical engineering and computer science since 2005. He held four patents, had published more than 150 academic papers, and authored a book, according to ASU’s website.A university spokesperson said in a statement, “We are saddened by the loss of ASU community member Junseok Chae. Florida on Saturday reported more than 12,000 new coronavirus infections within the previous 24-hour period, bringing the the state's total number of confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic to 414,511. On the other side of the Sun Belt, Arizona is seeing daily infections decline, seemingly without experiencing an elevated plateau, but the death rate -- a lagging indicator -- is increasing.With its latest tally, Florida has surpassed New York -- which has reported 411,200 cases -- as the state with the second highest number of confirmed infections behind California, which, like Florida, has seen cases surge over the last several weeks. New York has yet to see another major uptick since it mostly contained the virus after a significant epidemic in March, April, and May.Florida also reported 124 new resident deaths from COVID-19, bringing the total number of fatalities to 124. California Cops Scramble to Find Special Needs Toddler After Parents Stop Cooperating

California authorities on Thursday continued their desperate search for a special needs toddler who has been missing for over a week—a search made more difficult now that his parents have “stopped cooperating” with investigators. Thaddeus Sran, 2, was reported missing on July 15 after his parents said he vanished from their home in Madera, about 30 minutes outside Fresno, the City of Madera Police Department said in a statement. Stressing that they “will not stop looking for Thaddeus,” the department declined to give any updates on the case. According to his missing person’s poster, Thaddeus was last seen wearing a red shirt and Spiderman pants with a diaper underneath. Authorities said an Amber Alert was never issued for the 30-pound child because there was no information about a possible vehicle. Police added that the toddler’s family has offered a $5,000 reward for any information to help find him. Lawson also revealed last week that the toddler had “severe health issues” after he was born prematurely. He said that Thaddeus, who is non-verbal, uses a feeding tube and is just learning how to walk. “Everything is on the table and we’re not ruling anything out,” Lawson said about the investigation, adding that authorities are looking into the possibility the toddler’s disappearance was a possible abduction. Madera Police Lt. Josiah Arnold also revealed to NBC News that the toddler’s parents had another daughter who died in 2015, but declined to provide further details. He added, however, that Thaddeus’ sister’s death was investigated and the case remains open. On Tuesday evening, dozens of residents who have been helping in the search for Thaddeus, including a group of mothers, hosted a vigil at Courthouse Park with candles, photos, and posters asking for “prayers.” Many attendees wore red and blue, the colors of Thaddeus’ Spiderman pants. “We just want to bring him home safe and alive,” Sunndeep Sran, Thaddeus’s father’s second cousin, told YourCentralValley. She added that while her children go to school with the toddler’s siblings, she has not spoken to her cousin since March. “The Sran family appreciates every effort everyone is making,” Sran said. “We know as much as the media, what the police department is saying, so we are all in support of bringing Thaddeus home.”Lawson said that the Madera County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Marshals, and the FBI were aiding in the case. After practically ignoring President Donald Trump oddly wishing an accused sex trafficker “well,” Fox News finally broached the subject Thursday morning in an interview with White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany.While reviving his daily coronavirus briefings in an attempt to reverse his sagging approval ratings on the pandemic, Trump was asked on Tuesday if he felt longtime Jeffrey Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell would “turn in powerful men” following her arrest.“I don't know, I haven't really been following it too much,” the president replied. “I just wish her well, frankly. I've met her numerous times over the years, especially since I lived in Palm Beach and I guess they lived in Palm Beach.
